Democracy Under Fire: The Truth About Ranked Choice Voting

Alaska stands at a critical crossroads in its electoral history. As chair of Yes On 2, Mikaela Emswiler reveals a disturbing truth about ranked choice voting (RCV) in our state: while $12 million in out-of-state dark money floods in to keep RCV, only $10,000 of that amount comes from Alaskans.

Why are outside interests so invested in Alaska’s voting system? The answer lies in the national implications. Alaska is one of only two states with statewide RCV, and its success or failure here could determine its fate across America.

The system, implemented four years ago, was designed to keep certain politicians in power, as exposed by Project Veritas. More troubling still, RCV has led to record low voter turnout, with 26% of previous voters staying home simply because they don’t trust the system.

The consequences are already visible. Out-of-state candidates, including a Hollywood actress and even an imprisoned felon, have made it onto our ballots. Our jungle primary system has seen up to 75 candidates in statewide races, overwhelming voters and diluting the democratic process.

But there’s hope. Grassroots Alaskans are fighting back, with Yes On 2 gathering signatures across all 40 districts to return to a simpler, more transparent voting system. The polls show we’re tied, despite being outspent 100 to 1.

The message is clear: Alaskans want their voice back. The question is: will we let outside interests decide how we vote, or will we stand up for our electoral independence?
